Signature Dishes
Mr. Zhang started his restaurant business out of an aspiration to make high-quality Chinese food. At Joy House, every ingredient or process reflects Mr. Zhang's craftsmanship spirit and attention to details. Here, you can see his unreserved display of his more than 3 decades’ worth of cooking experience. 
The wok Hei is the essence of Chinese-style cooking, as well as a crucial element to make delicious dishes. Differing from other restaurants, Joy House pursues rich wok Hei for all its offerings to ensure the best color, fragrance and flavor. Such skills can be perceived even in the seemingly simple BBQ Pork Fired Rice. First pour oil in hot wok and add egg to stir-fry on high flame. After the egg is solidified, put green beans and onions in the wok to rapidly ignite the fragrance, followed by adding rice and finally minced garlic. The entire process is skillfully done at one stroke, occasionally accompanied by frequent flipping to fully mix ingredients with seasonings to elicit the wonderful Merad reaction within a very short period of time. What is served to table is steaming hot and distinctly separate and bright grains of fried rice that gives rise to lingering dry fragrance from the wonderful mixture of temperatures of rice and mouth, perfectly bringing out the soul of Chinese hot dishes. Such cuisine can never been made without Mr. Chen's decades’ practices in front of stove. 

The handmade Vegetarian Spring Rolls are another example of traditional secrets working their best. The freshly rolled-out dough wraps freshly boiled shredded bamboo shoots, agaric and carrot, as well as celery. After proper frying, the result is a hearty treat that is crispy on the outside and delicious on the inside. 

Other offerings like General Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Chongqing Style Spicy Chicken and Shredded Pork with Beijing Sauce all carry with them the extreme attentiveness and sincere work of the restaurant. 


30 Years of Experience 
Since 1989, Mr. Zhang has devoted himself to the restaurant business abounding with both challenges and opportunities. With his persistence and infinite passion for food, he has created an admirable story of entrepreneurship.  
For 10 years in China, Mr. Zhang had traveled to almost every corner of the restaurant world. He used to work at Hong Kong Food City, a famous Cantonese restaurant in Beijing, where he worked shoulder to shoulder with top notch chefs from Hong Kong and mastered the essence of Cantonese cooking. Such a valuable experience allowed him to not only lay a solid foundation in cooking but also gain a deeper understanding of the essence of Chinese cuisine.

In 1997, Mr. Zhang came to the US to continue his pursuit of the restaurant dream. In the Bay Area, he had the luck to learn from Chef Lawrence Chu, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the “Top 100 Chinese Restaurant in USA”. Under the careful guidance of Mr. Chu, Mr. Zhang spent more than 10 years in Chef Chu’s. Here, he further honed his cooking skills, broadened his horizon and mastered techniques of multiple cuisine lineages. In the meantime, he also gained a deep understanding and promoted Mr. Chu's concept of “creating dishes with heart and presenting the best side of Chinese food”.

In 2021, Mr. Zhang turned to a new chapter of his career. He founded his own restaurant named Joy House. Here, he devoted all his energy and passion to creating high-quality dishes and services. Always holding a humble attitude, Mr. Zhang constantly draws on the strengths of different restaurants and strives to create a good reputation from small details.
