With its scenic views, mild climate, and friendly people, Vancouver is known around the world as one of the best places to live and is a popular tourist attraction. Vancouver is also one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada with 52% of the population speaking a first language other than English.    Vancouver has been host to many international conferences and events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics. The restaurant we are talking about today is located just there, in Vancouver.

In 1981 Annie, who was then just 16 years old, firstly came to Canada. Arriving there she started off working at the F&B industry. What started as her first job eventually turned into her life long career. Just speaking to Annie, made me feel that her passion is food. To me that is the secret of her restaurant.

How did she make me feel her passion about food? That is a really simple question to answer. “She loves food, she loves to cook and she can cook really well.” Before Annie came to Canada, she cooked for her whole family. More than 20 people to cook for, and they all liked her food. Isn’t that amazing? To choose something you really like as your life career. I am sure that not everyone can be this lucky. Just because of this passion of hers, she can devote all her energy into something she likes. She mentions that even now that her business is mature, she still likes to be everywhere in her restaurant. People mention she is crazy about her job. They mention she should take it easy, rest more. But no, she doesn’t want to stop. This is the career she really likes, so although she is busy all the time, she still feels really happy.

We all know that these days no matter what kind of business you are engaged in, it is getting really difficult. Because of fierce competition and bad economy many businesses struggle. When I asked Annie about this, she answered, surprisingly, that she didn’t feel that way. I was eager to find out why. Her first reason was that there aren’t many types of restaurants like hers nearby. But the more important reason she mentioned was because her restaurant provides almost any kind of food. No matter if you like Vietnamese food, Chinese food, Western food, or rice, noodles. Almost everything customers want to try is available. Not only is there plenty of choice in food, it is also available from morning till night. Providing as much convenience as possible to make sure her customers feel comfortable and cozy. That is what Annie’s business is all about.

But with the prices of food surging a lot these days it is harder to keep a healthy business going. When questioning Annie about this, she mentioned her restaurant always tries to keep the prices low. This attracts more customers and earns her a better reputations among nearby residents. Fast service, fresh food, but at decent prices. Customers love it. So she always has a fully packed restaurant. A healthy Business indeed.

But a good business needs good personnel. Most of the employees in Annie’s restaurant have been working for Annie for more than 6 years. People really enjoy working with her and her employees really like Annie a lot. A great example of this is when some of her workers went back to Vietnam. Eventually when they came back to Canada after a long time, they still chose to work for Annie. Because of this kind of bond between her and her employees the atmosphere in the restaurant is really good. Thus having worked together this long all the employees cooperate very well.

Apart from managing the staff she feels it is also important to communicate with the customers, to make sure she understands the customer’s needs. As a boss, Annie always keeps an eye on everything. Being such a busy boss most people will wonder if Annie still has time left for her family. How does she keep a balance between business and family? Annie having two daughters stills frees up her schedule for them every day. Using the time around 3 in the afternoon when the restaurant is less busy to spend some time with her daughters.

There are no shortcuts to success. Annie’s experience teaches that if you want to be successful in a career or business you should love the thing you are doing right now and always put all your efforts into it. For Annie this means always keeping an eye on the food she provides, always care about her customer’s needs and always try to provide customers with the highest quality food for a reasonable price. We sincerely hope that her business will stay prosperous and bloom.
